Η Μάργκαρετ Άτγουντ γεννήθηκε στην Όταβα του Καναδά το 1939. Τα βιβλία της έχουν μεταφραστεί σε περισσότερες από 40 γλώσσες και συγκαταλέγεται στις σημαντικότερες πεζογράφους και κριτικούς του Καναδά. Σήμερα ζει στο Τορόντο με το σύντροφό της, το συγγραφέα Γκρέιμι Γκίμπσον.
