Orwell wrote the novel at the end of 1943, but it almost remained unpublished; its savage attack on Stalin, at that time Britain's ally, led to the book being refused by publisher after publisher. Orwell's simple, tragic fable has since become a world-famous classic.

This Penguin Modern classics edition includes an introduction by Malcolm Bradbury.

Συγγραφέας

Ο Έρικ Άρθουρ Μπλερ (Τζορτζ Όργουελ) γεννήθηκε το 1903 στην Ινδία. Η οικογένειά του μετακόμισε στην Αγγλία το 1907, και το 1917 ο Όργουελ έγινε δεκτός στο Κολέγιο Ίτον. Την περίοδο 1922-1927 υπηρέτησε ως μέλος της Αυτοκρατορικής Αστυνομίας Ινδιών στη Βιρμανία, από όπου εμπνεύστηκε το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα "Μέρες της Μπούρμα" (1934). Ακολούθησαν πολλά χρόνια ανέχειας και διάφορες δουλειές, στο Παρίσι και στο Λονδίνο, που αποτυπώνονται στο "Down and Out in Paris and London" (1933). Πολέμησε στον εμφύλιο της Ισπανίας με το μέρος των Δημοκρατικών και τραυματίστηκε, εμπειρίες που περιγράφει στο "Φόρος τιμής στην Καταλωνία". Το 1938 εισήχθη σε σανατόριο και από τότε δεν ανένηψε ποτέ εντελώς. Στο Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο εργάστηκε στην Ανατολική Υπηρεσία του BBC. Η αξεπέραστη πολιτική αλληγορία του "Η φάρμα των ζώων" (1945) τον έκανε παγκοσμίως γνωστό, ενώ η φήμη του έφτασε στο απόγειό της με το σκοτεινό, μελλοντολογικό "1984" (1949). Πέθανε στο Λονδίνο το 1950.
