Συγγραφέας

Ο Ζωρζ Σιμενόν γεννήθηκε στη Λιέγη του Βελγίου στις 13 Φεβρουαρίου 1903. Έπειτα από σπουδές στους Ιησουίτες έγινε, το 1919, μαθητευόμενος ζαχαροπλάστης, έπειτα υπάλληλος βιβλιοπωλείου, και τελικά ρεπόρτερ στη "Γκαζέτ ντε Λιέζ". Το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα, με τίτλο "Στο γεφύρι του Αρς" εκδόθηκε το 1921 και τότε ο Σιμενόν έφυγε απ' τη Λιέγη για το Παρίσι. Παντρεύτηκε το 1923 με την "Τιζύ" και δημοσίευσε διηγήματα και νουβέλες σε πολλές εφημερίδες. Το 1924 εξέδωσε, με ψευδώνυμο, το πρώτο "λαϊκό" του μυθιστόρημα, "Το μυθιστόρημα μιας δακτυλογράφου". Ως το 1930, δημοσίευσε διηγήματα και μυθιστορήματα σε πολλούς εκδότες. Το 1931, άρχισε τις έρευνές του ο περίφημος ήρωας του, ο επιθεωρητής Μαιγκρέ. Έγραφε τα βιβλία του, ταξίδευε, έστελνε ρεπορτάζ κι άφησε τις εκδόσεις "Φαγιάρ" για να πάει στις εκδόσεις "Γκαλλιμάρ", όπου συνάντησε τον Αντρέ Ζιντ. Στο πόλεμο ήταν υπεύθυνος των Βέλγων προσφύγων στη Λα Ροσέλ και κατοικούσε στη Βανδέα. Το 1945 μετανάστευσε στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες. Μετά το διαζύγιό του εγκαταστάθηκε ξανά στην Ευρώπη. Η δημοσίευση των απάντων του (72 τόμοι) άρχισε το 1967. Από το 1972 αποφάσισε να σταματήσει το γράψιμο. Αφοσιώθηκε έκτοτε στις εικοσιδύο "Υπαγορεύσεις" του και κατόπιν συνέταξε τα ογκώδη απομνημονεύματα "Memoires intimes" (1981). Ο Ζωρζ Σιμενόν πέθανε στη Λωζάννη το 1989. Πολλά μυθιστορήματά του έχουν διασκευαστεί για τον κινηματογράφο και την τηλεόραση.
