Tom Stoppard's English version of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard had its first New York performance at the Harvey Theater, Brooklyn in January 2009, and its first London performance at the Old Vic Theatre in May 2009.

Συγγραφέας

Άντον Τσέχοφ (1860 - 1904): Ο Αντόν Πάβλοβιτς Τσέχωφ ήταν Ρώσος συγγραφέας πολλών διηγημάτων, θεατρικών έργων και μυθιστορημάτων. Γεννήθηκε στις 17 Ιανουαρίου 1860 στην κωμόπολη Ταγκανρόγκ, στη νότια Ρωσία. Ήταν το τρίτο από τα έξι παιδιά της οικογένειάς του και μεγάλωσε σε πολύ αυστηρό και θρησκευτικό περιβάλλον. Ο Τσέχωφ από την 6η τάξη του γυμνασίου αναγκάστηκε μόνος του να βγάζει το ψωμί του παραδίδοντας μαθήματα κατ' οίκον. Το 1879 μπαίνει στο ιατρικό τμήμα του πανεπιστημίου της Μόσχας, το οποίο τελείωσε το 1884. Από τον καιρό της σπουδής του στο γυμνάσιο, ο Τσέχωφ άρχισε να γράφει χιουμοριστικές σκηνές, αφηγήσεις, μονόπρακτα. Από το 1880 τα έργα του αρχίζουν να δημοσιεύονται στα περιοδικά "Ξυπνητήρι", "Θεατής", "Μόσχα", "Φως και σκιά", "Θραύσματα" κ.ά. με το ψευδώνυμο Αντόσια Τσεχοντέ. Το 1884 κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο του βιβλίο διηγημάτων "Τα παραμύθια της Μελπομένης". Το 1884-85 γράφει την ιατρική του διατριβή που δεν τελείωσε, εξαιτίας των ασχολιών του. Ως γιατρός βοηθούσε τους ανήμπορους και παρείχε τις ιατρικές υπηρεσίες του δωρεάν. Μερικά από τα πιο γνωστά έργα του είναι: "Ο γλάρος", "Ο θείος Βάνιας", "Οι τρεις αδελφές", "Ο βυσσινόκηπος", "Στέππα" κ.ά. Πέθανε το 1904.
