Συγγραφέας

Ο George Raymond Richard Martin γεννήθηκε το 1948 στο New Jersey των ΗΠΑ. Θεωρείται ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους συγγραφείς της λογοτεχνίας του φανταστικού. Σπούδασε δημοσιογραφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο Northwestern του Ιλινόις και εργάστηκε ως σεναριογράφος και παραγωγός για την τηλεόραση και τον κινηματογράφο. Ξεκίνησε τη συγγραφική του σταδιοδρομία το 1971, όταν το διήγημά του με τίτλο "Hero" δημοσιεύτηκε στο περιοδικό "Galaxy". Το 1997 γνώρισε τη διεθνή καταξίωση με το "Παιχνίδι του Στέμματος" ("A Game of Thrones"), το πρώτο μέρος της σειράς "Το τραγούδι της φωτιάς και του πάγου" ("A Song of Ice and Fire"), τα βιβλία της οποίας έχουν αποσπάσει εξαιρετικές κριτικές, έχουν μεταφραστεί σε περισσότερες από δέκα γλώσσες κι έχουν πουλήσει εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως. Ο Martin μέχρι σήμερα έχει τιμηθεί έξι φορές με το βραβείο Locus, τέσσερις φορές με το βραβείο Hugo, δύο φορές με το βραβείο Nebula, ενώ έχει κατακτήσει επίσης τα βραβεία World Fantasy και Bram Stoker.
