Ο Eric Carle γεννήθηκε στις Συρακούσες της Νέας Υόρκης το 1929 και πέθανε τον Μάιο του 2021 στο καλοκαιρινό του στούντιο στην Μασαχουσέτη. Οι γονείς του ήταν μετανάστες από τη Γερμανία και το 1935 η οικογένεια επέστρεψε στη Στουτγάρδη. Στα 16 του, ο Έρικ παρακολούθησε μαθήματα εικαστικών, εμπειρία που του άνοιξε έναν ολόκληρο καινούργιο κόσμο. Για αρκετά χρόνια, εργάστηκε ως γραφίστας στη Νέα Υόρκη. Σχεδόν σαραντάρης, άρχισε να γράφει και να εικονογραφεί παιδικά βιβλία. Τα θέματά του, παρμένα συνήθως από τη φύση, συνοδεύονται από πολύχρωμες ζωγραφιές με θαυμάσια κολάζ, που εξάπτουν τη φαντασία των παιδιών και προάγουν την αισθητική τους. Δημιουργός 70 εμβληματικών βιβλίων που, μεταφρασμένα σε δεκάδες γλώσσες, έχουν πουλήσει πάνω από 170 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα παγκοσμίως, ο Έρικ Καρλ δικαίως θεωρείται ένας κλασικός της εποχής μας. Το 2002 ο Καρλ και η γυναίκα του, Μπάρμπαρα, ίδρυσαν στο Άμχερστ της Μασαχουσέτης το The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (www.carlemuseum.org).
