Συγγραφέας

Ο Joseph Conrad (κατά κόσμον Josef Teodor Konrad Nalecz Korzeniowski) γεννήθηκε το 1857 στην Ουκρανία η οποία βρισκόταν τότε υπό ρωσική κυριαρχία. Οι γονείς του, ένθερμοι Πολωνοί πατριώτες, αγωνιστές κι εξόριστοι λόγω αντικαθεστωτικής δράσης, πέθαναν όταν ο Conrad ήταν ακόμα μικρός. Για τα επόμενα εικοσιπέντε χρόνια, την κηδεμονία του ανέλαβε ανεπίσημα ο θείος του και αδερφός της μητέρας του Tadeusz Bobrowski, ο οποίος στα 1874 έδωσε τη συγκατάθεσή του προκειμένου να γίνει ο ανιψιός του ναυτικός. Ο Conrad ξεκίνησε τη ναυτική του σταδιοδρομία από τη Μασσαλία, όπου πρώτα υπηρέτησε σε γαλλικά εμπορικά πλοία και κατόπιν σ' ένα αγγλικό, ως δόκιμος. Στα 1886, απέκτησε την αγγλική υπηκοότητα και το δίπλωμα του Πλοιάρχου του Βρετανικού Εμπορικού Ναυτικού. Οκτώ χρόνια αργότερα, εγκατέλειψε τη θάλασσα με σκοπό ν' αφοσιωθεί ολοκληρωτικά στη συγγραφή και στα 1895 εξέδωσε το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα με τίτλο "Η τρέλα του Αλμάγιερ". Στα 1896 παντρεύτηκε τη Jessie George και εγκαταστάθηκε οριστικά στο Κεντ, όπου έγραψε γνωστά αριστουργήματα όπως "Η καρδιά του σκότους", "Λόρδος Τζιμ", "Ο μυστικός πράκτορας, Νειάτα", "Τυφώνας" κ.ά. Κάποια έργα του θεωρούνται "ρομαντικά", αλλά ο "ρομαντισμός" του είναι εμποτισμένος με έντονη ειρωνεία, προπάντων για την ικανότητα του ατόμου να ξεγελά τον εαυτό του. Πολλοί κριτικοί τον θεωρούν πρόδρομο του μοντερνισμού. Το αφηγηματικό ύφος και οι υπαρξιακοί, αντι-ηρωικοί χαρακτήρες του, έχουν επηρεάσει πολλούς συγγραφείς. Ανάμεσα στους θαυμαστές του ήταν ο Χένρι Τζέιμς και ο Φορντ Μάντοξ Φόρντ με τον οποίο συνεργάστηκε για τη συγγραφή δύο μυθιστορημάτων.
