Συγγραφέας

Ο Ρόμπερτ Λούις Στήβενσον (Robert Louis Stevenson) γεννήθηκε στο Εδιμβούργο στις 13 Νοεμβρίου του 1850. Καταγόταν από εύπορη οικογένεια αυστηρών αρχών και σπούδασε μηχανικός στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Εδιμβούργου. Αργότερα τελείωσε και τη Νομική Σχολή, αλλά σύντομα τον κέρδισε η λογοτεχνία- απαρνήθηκε τον καλβινισμό της αστικής του οικογένειας και ακολούθησε τη ζωή των μποέμ. Έγραψε μυθιστορήματα, ποιήματα, δοκίμια, επιστολές ταξιδιωτικά και παιδικά βιβλία. Σ' όλη του τη ζωή ταξίδευε -συχνά για λόγους υγείας- για να καταλήξει τελικά στους Τροπικούς, στη Σάμοα, όπου συνέχισε το συγγραφικό του έργο. Οι ιθαγενείς τον λάτρευαν και τον αποκαλούσαν Tusitala (ο παραμυθάς). "Το νησί των θησαυρών" (1883) ξεκίνησε σαν απλός χάρτης που θα μπορούσε να διασκεδάσει τα παιδιά. Άλλα γνωστά έργα του είναι: "Η παράξενη ιστορία του Δόκτορα Τζέκιλ και του κυρίου Χάιντ" (1886), "Η απαγωγή" (1886) και "Ο αφέντης του Μπάλαντρε" (1889). Πέθανε ξαφνικά στις 3 Δεκεμβρίου του 1894, στο ζενίθ της δημιουργικής του πορείας.
