Συγγραφέας

Ο Ουίλιαμ Σ. Μπάροουζ (William S. Burroughs) γεννήθηκε το 1914 στπ Μισούρι των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Το 1953 κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο και ημιαυτοβιογραφικό μυθιστόρημά του, "Τζάνκι" (εκδ. Τόπος, 2009), το οποίο θεωρείται η πλέον χαρακτηριστική απεικόνιση του εφιαλτικού αγώνα ενάντια στα ναρκωτικά, εμπειρία που τον ταλαιπώρησε σε όλη σχεδόν τη ζωή του. Το 1951, σκοτώνει κατά λάθος τη γυναίκα του, ενώ έπαιζαν μεθυσμένοι τον Γουλιέλμο Τέλλο, μια πράξη που τον έστειλε στη φυλακή και στο ψυχιατρείο. Ο Μπάροουζ μαζί με τον Άλεν Γκίνσμπεργκ και τον Τζακ Κέρουακ, θεωρούνται οι σπουδαιότεροι εκπρόσωποι των μπιτ στη λογοτεχνία.Η έρευνά του στη γλώσσα ("η γλώσσα είναι ιός") και οι πειραματισμοί του με το κείμενο (τα περίφημα cut-up: "ο καθένας που διαθέτει ένα ψαλίδι μπορεί να γίνει ποιητής") αποτελούν συστατικα στοιχεία του έργου του. Πιο γνωστά του έργα τα μυθιστορήματα "Γυμνό Γεύμα" (1956/ εκδ. Τόπος, 2010), "Queer" (1986/ εκδ. Τόπος, 2010) και "Exterminator!" (1973), και οι τριλογίες "Nova Express" ("The Soft Machine", "Nova Express", "The Ticket That Exploded") και "Red Night Trilogy" ("Cities of the Red Night", "The Place of Dead Roads", "The Western Lands"). Από τις εκδόσεις "Τόπος" κυκλοφορεί επίσης το βιβλίο που εγκαινίασε τη γενιά των μπιτ (και που έγραψε από κοινού με τον Τζακ Κέρουακ) το "Και έβρασαν οι ιπποπόταμοι στις γούρνες τους". Πέθανε το 1997.
