Mansfield Park By Jane Austen tells the story of Fanny Price, a frail, quiet young woman who has none of the high spirits or wit of Elizabeth Bennet or Marianne Dashwood. Reared from the age of ten among wealthy relatives, Fanny is an unobtrusive presence in the household at Mansfield Park, useful and agreeable to everyone and steadfast in her secret affection for her cousin, Edmund Bertram.

Fanny's manner contrasts sharply with the livelier, sometimes careless behavior of her cousins and their friends. Only Edmund spends time with the gentle Fanny, although his own affections have been captivated by the sophisticated Mary Crawford. With Fanny's uncle, Sir Thomas Bertram, away on an extended stay in the West Indies, the cousins and their friends decide to put on an amateur theatrical production of a scandalous French play. Only Fanny refuses to participate, out of natural modesty and a certainty that her absent uncle would not approve.

Sir Thomas returns unexpectedly and does not approve, much to his children's chagrin, but Fanny quickly falls from his favor when she refuses the proposal of Mary Crawford's brother, Henry, who had begun an unwelcome flirtation with her after Fanny's cousin Maria married another man.

Η Τζέιν Ώστεν γεννήθηκε το 1775 στο Στίβεντον του Χαμσάιρ, και ήταν η έβδομη από τα οχτώ παιδιά της οικογένειας. Ο πατέρας της, ο αιδεσιμότατος Τζορτζ Ώστιν, ήταν πολυμαθής και καλλιεργημένος, και η Τζέιν μορφώθηκε κυρίως στο σπίτι. Διάβαζε ασταμάτητα από παιδί, ιδιαίτερα τα έργα του Φίλντινγκ, του Στερν, του Ρίτσαρντσον και του Σκοτ. Άρχισε να γράφει από πολύ μικρή ηλικία. 'Εγραψε το "Αγάπη και φιλία" όταν ήταν μόλις δεκατεσσάρων ετών. Ακολούθησε η "Ιστορία της Αγγλίας" στα δεκάξι και το "Μια συλλογή επιστολών" στα δεκαεπτά. Μετά τον θάνατο του πατέρα της, το 1805, αυτή και η μητέρα της μετακόμισαν στο Σαουθάμπτον, για να εγκατασταθούν τελικά στο Τσότον του Χαμσάιρ το 1809, όπου και έγραψε τα μεγαλύτερα μυθιστορήματά της. Αν και η ίδια έζησε μια πολύ ήσυχη ζωή -δεν παντρεύτηκε ποτέ και σπάνια έβγαινε από το σπίτι- τα έργα της δείχνουν την εκπληκτική της παρατηρητικότητα. Μόνο τέσσερα μυθιστορήματα εκδόθηκαν όσο ζούσε "Λογική και ευαισθησία" (1811), "Περηφάνια και προκατάληψη" (1813), "Μάνσφιλντ Παρκ" (1814) και "Έμμα" (1816) -και όλα εκδόθηκαν ανώνυμα. Σε μια σπάνια έξοδό της από το σπίτι αρρώστησε και πέθανε από τη νόσο του Άντισον το 1817. Δύο ακόμη μυθιστορήματα, το "Πειθώ" και το "Νορθάνγκερ Άμπει" εκδόθηκαν μετά το θάνατό της, το 1818. Το "Σάντιτον", το μυθιστόρημα που έγραφε όταν πέθανε, εκδόθηκε το 1925.
