Ο Στίβεν Κινγκ γεννήθηκε το 1947 στο Πόρτλαντ της Πολιτείας του Μέιν. Σπούδασε με υποτροφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Μέιν. Δίδασκε αγγλικά στο λύκειο, όταν έγινε δεκτό προς έκδοση το πρώτο μυθιστόρημά του, "Κάρι". Από τότε έχει γράψει περισσότερα από σαράντα μυθιστορήματα, που έγιναν όλα μπεστ σέλερ, και περισσότερα από διακόσια διηγήματα. Σήμερα θεωρείται ως ο κορυφαίος συγγραφέας τρόμου και φαντασίας στον κόσμο, αλλά και ως ένας από τους σημαντικότερους συγγραφείς της εποχής μας. Έχει τιμηθεί με πολλές διακρίσεις για το έργο του, ανάμεσα στις οποίες το Διεθνές Βραβείο Φαντασίας, τα ειδικά βραβεία Bram Stoker, O. Henry, Nebula, κ.ά., το Βραβείο Ποιητών και Συγγραφέων 1997, και το βραβείο για το σύνολο του έργου του από την Ένωση Συγγραφέων Τρόμου. Το 2003 το Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Βιβλίου των ΗΠΑ του απένειμε το Μετάλλιο Διακεκριμένης Συνεισφοράς στα Αμερικανικά Γράμματα. Μυθιστορήματα και νουβέλες του έχουν γίνει ταινίες για τον κινηματογράφο: "Ομίχλη", "Λάμψη", "Κριστίν", "Μίζερι", "Καρδιές στην Ατλαντίδα", "Ονειροπαγίδα", κ.ά., τέσσερις από τις οποίες -οι εξής: "Έκρηξη οργής" ("Κάρι"), "Στάσου πλάι μου", "Τελευταία έξοδος: Ρίτα Χέιγουορθ" και "Πράσινο μίλι" -ήταν υποψήφιες για Όσκαρ καλύτερης ταινίας. Τον Ιούνιο του 1999, εποχή κατά την οποία είχε ολοκληρώσει την πρώτη γραφή του βιβλίου του "Περί συγγραφής" ("On Writing"), παρασύρθηκε από διερχόμενο βαν περπατώντας σ' ένα δρόμο του Μέιν. Το δυστύχημα προκάλεσε σοβαρά τραύματα στο κεφάλι, τον πνεύμονα, τα πλευρά, τους γοφούς και το δεξί του πόδι και χρειάστηκαν πέντε χειρουργεία μέσα σε δέκα μέρες και πολύμηνη θεραπεία -κατά την διάρκεια της οποίας ολοκλήρωσε το βιβλίο- για την αποκατάσταση της υγείας του. Μνήμες του ατυχήματος και της νοσηλείας του περιλαμβάνονται στα μυθιστορήματα "Ονειροπαγίδα", "Μίζερι" και "Kingdom Hospital" που ακολούθησαν, καθώς και στο επτάτομο έπος φαντασίας "Ο μαύρος πύργος", το πιο σύνθετο και μεγαλεπήβολο έργο της καριέρας του, στον έβδομο τόμο του οποίου ο ήρωας προσπαθεί να υπνωτίσει τόσο τον συγγραφέα όσο και τον οδηγό του βαν που τον χτύπησε. Ο Στίβεν Κινγκ ζει με τη σύζυγό του Τάμπιθα, επίσης συγγραφέα, στο Μπάνγκορ του Μέιν.
