Ο Τζον Γκρίσαμ γεννήθηκε στο Αρκάνσας το 1955· είναι απόφοιτος του Πανεπιστημίου του Μισισιπή και της Νομικής Σχολής του Ολ Μις, αλλά εγκατέλειψε νωρίς τη δικηγορία για να ασχοληθεί αποκλειστικά με τη συγγραφή. Αυτή η μεταστροφή του έχει μέχρι σήμερα αποδώσει τα περίφημα δικαστικά θρίλερ "Η ετυμηγορία", "Η εταιρεία", "Κωδικό όνομα Πελεκάνος", "Ο πελάτης", "Θάλαμος αερίων", "Ο βροχοποιός", "Οι ένορκοι", "Ο συνέταιρος", "Ο δικηγόρος των δρόμων", "Η διαθήκη" και "Η αδελφότητα". Ο συγγραφέας ζει με τη σύζυγό του Ρενέ και τα δύο τους παιδιά σ' ένα αγρόκτημα στο Όξφορντ του Μισισιπή, ενώ περνά αρκετό χρόνο και στη Σάρλοτσβιλ της Βιρτζίνια.
