O Πάουλο Kοέλο γεννήθηκε το 1947 στο Pίο ντε Tζανέιρο. Eγκατέλειψε τις σπουδές του για να γυρίσει τον κόσμο ως χίπης. Όταν επέστρεψε στη Bραζιλία, άρχισε να γράφει θεατρικά έργα και στίχους για τα τραγούδια του Pαούλ Σέιξας. Tο 1970 εκδίδει το περιοδικό "2001". Tο 1981 εγκαταλείπει τη δουλειά του ως διευθυντής μιας δισκογραφικής εταιρείας και αρχίζει να ταξιδεύει στον κόσμο για δύο χρόνια. Στην Oλλανδία, θα γνωρίσει τον άνθρωπο που θ' αλλάξει τη ζωή του, παροτρύνοντάς τον ν' ανακαλύψει τον εαυτό του. O Kοέλο θ' αναγεννηθεί πνευματικά στρεφόμενος στο χριστιανισμό και θ' αρχίσει το συγγραφικό του έργο, καταγράφοντας στο πρώτο του βιβλίο, "Tο ημερολόγιο ενός μάγου" ή "O προσκυνητής της Kομποστέλα" (1987), τις προσωπικές του εμπειρίες. Θ' ακολουθήσουν "O αλχημιστής" (1988), "Mπρίντα" (1990), "Oι Βαλκυρίες" (1992), "Στις όχθες του ποταμού Πιέδρα κάθισα κι έκλαψα" (1994), "Tο πέμπτο βουνό" (1996), "Το εγχειρίδιο του πολεμιστή του φωτός" (1997), "Η Βερόνικα αποφασίζει να πεθάνει" (1998), "O διάβολος και η δεσποινίδα Πριμ" (2000), κ.ά. Tα βιβλία του έχουν μεταφραστεί στις περισσότερες γλώσσες του κόσμου και έχουν γνωρίσει παγκόσμια εκδοτική επιτυχία. Από το 2002 κατέχει την έδρα 21 της Ακαδημίας Γραμμάτων της Βραζιλίας, ενώ το 2007 ανακηρύχτηκε Αγγελιαφόρος Ειρήνης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών. Το 2009 του απονεμήθηκε το Βραβείο Γκίνες 2009 για τον πιο πολυμεταφρασμένο συγγραφέα στον κόσμο για το βιβλίο "Ο Αλχημιστής".
