Ο Γιου Νέσμπο γεννήθηκε στις 29 Μαρτίου 1960 στο Όσλο, παιδί εξαμελούς οικογένειας. Στα 17 του χρόνια έπαιξε ποδόσφαιρο σε ομάδα της Α' Εθνικής κατηγορίας, τη Μόλντε, αλλά τραυματίστηκε στο πόδι. Στη συνέχεια σπούδασε οικονομικά και εργάστηκε ως χρηματιστής και ως δημοσιογράφος. Επίσης, υπήρξε μέλος -συνθέτης και τραγουδιστής- του δημοφιλούς ροκ συγκροτήματος "Di Derre". Το 1997 κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο του αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα με τίτλο "Flaggermusmannen/The Bat" ("Η νυχτερίδα"), πρώτο της σειράς με πρωταγωνιστή τον ντετέκτιβ Χάρι Χόλε, που τιμήθηκε αμέσως με βραβεία στη Σκανδιναβική χερσόνησο. Ακολούθησαν τα αστυνομικά βιβλία "Kakerlakkene/The Cockroaches" ("Οι κατσαρίδες"), 1998, "Rodstrupe/The Redbreast" ("Ο κοκκινολαίμης"), 2000, "Sorgenfri/Nemesis" ("Νέμεσις"), 2002, "Marekors/The Devil's Star" ("Το αστέρι του διαβόλου"), 2003, "Frelseren/The Redeemer" ("Ο λυτρωτής"), 2005, "Snomannen/The Snowman" ("Ο χιονάνθρωπος"), 2007, "Hodejegerne/The Headhunters" ("Κυνηγοί κεφαλών"), 2008, "Panserhjerte/The Leopard" ("Η λεοπάρδαλη"), 2009, "Gjenferd/Phantom" ("Φάντασμα"), 2011, "Politi/Police" ("Αστυνομία"), 2013, "Sοnnen/The Son" ("Ο γιος"), 2014, "Blod pa sno/Blood on Snow" ("Αίμα στο χιόνι"), 2015, "Mere blod/Midnight Sun" ("Περισσότερο αίμα"), 2015, "Torst/The Thirst" ("Η δίψα"), 2017· τέσσερα βιβλία για παιδιά, μεταξύ 2007-2012, με ήρωα τον Doktor Proktor (ή "Δόκτορα Πορδαλό")· ένας τόμος με διηγήματα· κ.ά. Διάσημος σήμερα όσο και ο καλτ ντετέκτιβ του, βλέπει τις πωλήσεις των βιβλίων του να ξεπερνούν τα 30 εκ. αντίτυπα διεθνώς, μεταφρασμένα σε περισσότερες από 40 χώρες. Είναι ο πιο επιτυχημένος νορβηγός συγγραφέας αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων, ενώ οι πωλήσεις του, διεθνώς, τον κατατάσσουν πιο ψηλά από τον Σουηδό Stieg Larsson (1954-2004), με τον οποίο μερικές φορές τον συγκρίνουν. Οι "Κυνηγοί κεφαλών" μεταφέρθηκαν στον κινηματογράφο από τον Νορβηγό σκηνοθέτη Morten Tyldum, το 2012, και ακολούθησε το βιβλίο της σειράς Χάρι Χόλε, "Ο χιονάνθρωπος", από τον Τόμας Άλφρεντσον, το 2017, στη διεθνή παραγωγή με πρωταγωνιστές τους Μάικλ Φασμπέντερ, Ρεμπέκα Φέργκιουσον και Κλοέ Σεβινύ. Έχει τιμηθεί με τα πιο έγκυρα βραβεία, όπως τα The Riverton Prize (1997), The Glass Key (1998), The Norwegian Bookseller's Book of the Year (2000 και 2007), ενώ "Ο κοκκινολαίμης" ψηφίστηκε από τις Λέσχες Ανάγνωσης της χώρας του ως το Καλύτερο Νορβηγικό Αστυνομικό Μυθιστόρημα όλων των εποχών. Επίσης, "Ο κοκκινολαίμης" έφτασε στη μικρή λίστα υποψηφιοτήτων για το βραβείο Duncan Lawrie, στη Μ. Βρετανία (2007) και το "Νέμεσις" για το βραβείο Edgar, στις ΗΠΑ (2010). Ζει μόνιμα στο Όσλο.
