Η Πατρίσια Κόρνγουελ γεννήθηκε το 1956 στο Μαϊάμι. Εργάστηκε πέντε χρόνια ως αστυνομική ρεπόρτερ στην εφημερίδα "Charlotte Observer" και στη συνέχεια ως αναλύτρια προγραμμάτων στο Ιατροδικαστικό Κέντρο της Βιρτζίνια. ΄Εχει γράψει δεκαπέντε ως τώρα βιβλία, από τα οποία τα δώδεκα είναι αστυνομικά μυθιστορήματα, όπου πρωταγωνιστεί η δαιμόνια ιατροδικαστής δόκτωρ Κέυ Σκαρπέττα. Το πρώτο της μυθιστόρημα, "Postmortem" (1990), είναι το μόνο έργο παγκοσμίως που κατόρθωσε να κερδίσει μέσα στην ίδια χρονιά πέντε λογοτεχνικά βραβεία (Edgar, John Creasey, Anthony, MacAvity και το γαλλικό Prix du Roman d' Aventure). ΄Εκτοτε κάθε βιβλίο της γίνεται παγκόσμια εκδοτική επιτυχία κι έχει αποκτήσει παντού εκατομμύρια φανατικούς αναγνώστες. Η Πατρίσια Κόρνγουελ θεωρείται σήμερα η πιο σημαντική εκπρόσωπος της αστυνομικής λογοτεχνίας στις ΗΠΑ και είναι η πιο ακριβοπληρωμένη γυναίκα συγγραφέας στον κόσμο: το 1996 έλαβε από τον εκδοτικό οίκο Putnam είκοσι τέσσερα εκατομμύρια δολάρια για τα τρία επόμενα μυθιστορήματά της. Σήμερα ζει και εργάζεται στο Ρίτσμοντ της Βιρτζίνια.
