Ο Μάικλ Κόνελι γεννήθηκε στη Φιλαδέλφεια της Πενσιλβάνια το 1956. Σπούδασε δημοσιογραφία στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Φλόριντα και έχει εργαστεί ως αστυνομικός και δικαστικός ρεπόρτερ στους Los Angeles Times.
