Ο Τσαρλς Ντίκενς γεννήθηκε στο Πόρτσμουθ της Αγγλίας στις 8 Φεβρουαρίου 1812, και ήταν το δεύτερο από τα οχτώ παιδιά της οικογένειάς του. Όταν ο Κάρολος ήταν 12 χρονών, ο πατέρας του μπήκε στη φυλακή για χρέη και ο μικρός αναγκάστηκε να πιάσει δουλειά. Οι παιδικές του εργασίες είναι παρόμοιες μ' αυτές που περιγράφει στο βιβλίο του "Δαβίδ Κόππερφιλντ. Η επίσημη εκπαίδευσή του ήταν περιορισμένη, αλλά, καθώς είχε γνώσεις στενογραφίας, πολύ νέος έπιασε δουλειά ως ρεπόρτερ στη "Morning Chronicle". Από τη θέση αυτή παραιτήθηκε ύστερα από μερικά χρόνια, όταν πια είχε αρχίσει τη συγγραφική του σταδιοδρομία. Αργότερα έγινε πρακτικογράφος στη Βουλή. Το 1836 δημοσίευσε τον πρώτο τόμο με άρθρα του για την καθημερινή ζωή στο Λονδίνο, με τίτλο "Σκίτσα του Μποζ". Το 1837 ακολούθησε ο δεύτερος τόμος. Το μυθιστόρημά του "Όλιβερ Τουίστ" (1838) θα τον κάνει ευρύτερα γνωστό. Το πρώτο του ταξίδι στην Αμερική (1841) του ενέπνευσε δύο έργα το "Αμερικάνικα σημειώματα" (1842) και το μυθιστόρημα "Μάρτιν Τσασλουάιτ" (1844). Εγκλήματα, αθλιότητα, κτηνωδία και θάνατος συνυπάρχουν με κωμική εφευρετικότητα και απέραντη τρυφερότητα στο έργο του Τσαρλς Ντίκενς. Άλλα σημαντικά έργα του είναι: "Δαβίδ Κόπερφηλντ" (1850), "Τα δύσκολα χρόνια" (1854), "Ιστορία δύο πόλεων" (1859), "Μεγάλες προσδοκίες" (1861). Πέθανε στο Λονδίνο στις 9 Ιουνίου 1870, στη χώρα κηρύχθηκε πένθος και τον έθαψαν στη γωνία των ποιητών, στο Γουεστμίνστερ Άμπεϋ. Η δημοτικότητά του ήταν εξαιρετική όσο ζούσε και, όπως είπε και ο Walter Allen, "η επιρροή του εξακολουθεί να είναι αισθητή και το έργο του μέρος του λογοτεχνικού κλίματος μέσα στο οποίο ζει ο δυτικός άνθρωπος".
