Συγγραφέας

Ο Έρνεστ Μίλερ Χέμινγουαίη γεννήθηκε το 1899 στο Oak του Ιλινόις. Από τα παιδικά του χρόνια γνώρισε το πάθος των ταξιδιών που σημάδεψε τη ζωή και το συγγραφικό του έργο. Το 1917 ο Χέμινγουαίη προσλήφθηκε ως ρεπόρτερ στην εφημερίδα Αστέρας του Κάνσας Σίτυ. Τον επόμενο χρόνο δέχτηκε να πάει ως εθελοντής οδηγός ασθενοφόρου στο ιταλικό μέτωπο, όπου πληγώθηκε άσχημα και παρασημοφορήθηκε δύο φορές. Γύρισε στις Η.Π.Α. το 1919 και παντρεύτηκε το 1921. Το 1922 ήταν ανταποκριτής στο ελληνοτουρκικό μέτωπο και δύο χρόνια αργότερα εγκατέλειψε τη δημοσιογραφία για να αφιερωθεί στη λογοτεχνία. Εγκαταστάθηκε στο Παρίσι, όπου ανανέωσε τις πρώιμες φιλίες του με αμερικανούς αυτοεξόριστους, όπως τον Έζρα Πάουντ και τη Γερτρούδη Στάιν. Η ενθάρρυνση και το ενδιαφέρον που έδειξαν για τα κείμενά του έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στη διαμόρφωση του ύφους του Χέμινγουαίη. Τα δύο πρώτα βιβλία του ήταν οι "Τρεις ιστορίες και δέκα ποιήματα" και το "Στον καιρό μας" (1925). Ευρύτερα, όμως έγινε γνωστός με τη σατιρική νουβέλα "Οι χείμαρροι της άνοιξης" (1926), με την οποία και καθιερώθηκε. Η διεθνής του φήμη επιβεβαιώθηκε με τα επόμενα τρία βιβλία του : "Φιέστα" (1926), "Άντρες χωρίς γυναίκες" (1927) και "Αποχαιρετισμός στα όπλα" (1929). Αναμίχθηκε με πάθος στις ταυρομαχίες, "Θάνατος στο απομεσήμερο" (1932), στο κυνήγι άγριων ζώων στην Αφρική, "Οι πράσινοι λόφοι της Αφρικής" (1935), και στο ψάρεμα στην ανοιχτή θάλασσα, "Ο γέρος και η θάλασσα" (1952). Στο κλασικό μυθιστόρημα "Για ποιον χτυπά η καμπάνα" (1940) καταγράφονται οι εμπειρίες του από την παραμονή του στην Ισπανία κατά τον Εμφύλιο Πόλεμο. Το άμεσο και φαινομενικά απλό ύφος της γραφής του δημιούργησε ολόκληρες γενιές μιμητών, χωρίς όμως σημαντικά αποτελέσματα, ενώ η αναγνώριση της θέσης του στην παγκόσμια λογοτεχνία ήλθε το 1954, όταν τιμήθηκε με το Βραβείο Νόμπελ. Ο Χέμινγουαίη αυτοκτόνησε το 1961 στο Αϊντάχο.
