This book explores the transcendent perceptions that arise when life is tested to its limits. Writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1900-44), was born in Lyon, France. His first two books, Southern Mail and Night Flight, are distinguished by a poetic evocation of the romance and discipline of flying.

Later works, including Wind, Sand and Stars and Flight to Arras, stress his humanistic philosophy. Saint-Exupéry's popular children's book The Little Prince is also read by adults for its allegorical meaning. Saint-Exupéry's plane disappeared during a mission in World War II.

Ο Αντουάν Ντε Σαιντ-Εξυπερύ γεννήθηκε στην πόλη Λυών της Γαλλίας το 1900 στην οδό Peyrat 8, (σήμερα οδός Antoine De Saint Exypery), 3ο παιδί των Antoine Jean Baptiste De Saint Exypery και της Marie Roger Fonscolombe. Αφού μαθήτευσε σε εκκλησιαστικά ιδρύματα, όπου αποδείχτηκε απείθαρχος μαθητής, απέτυχε διαδοχικά στη Ναυτική Σχολή και την Ecole Centrale, προτού εγγραφεί τελικά στη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών. Το 1921, με την ευκαιρία της στρατιωτικής του θητείας, πήρε δίπλωμα πιλότου κι έγινε πιλότος στη Γαλλική Αεροπορική Εταιρεία και κατόπιν στη Latecoere. Στον αερολιμένα ανεφοδιασμού της γραμμής Καζαμπλάνκας-Ντακάρ στο ακρωτήριο Judy στο Μαρόκο, ανακάλυψε την έρημο. Το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα, "Ταχυδρομείο του Νότου", εκδόθηκε το 1928. Την επόμενη χρονιά ο Σαιντ-Εξυπερύ έγινε διευθυντής της Aeroposta Argentina στο Μπουένος Άιρες, όπου γνώρισε την Κονσουέλο Σουνσίν, την οποία παντρεύτηκε το 1931. Την ίδια εκείνη χρονιά βραβεύτηκε με το Prix Femina για το μυθιστόρημά του "Νυχτερινή πτήση" και παραιτήθηκε από την Aeroposta. Έγινε κύριος ανταποκριτής της France-Soir στη Ρωσία και κατόπιν στην Ισπανία το 1936. Το 1937, επιστρέφοντας στην αεροπορία, εδραίωσε την από αέρος σύνδεση Καζαμπλάνκας-Τιμπουκτού. Μετά από ένα σοβαρό ατύχημα, αφοσιώθηκε στη συγγραφή. Το μυθιστόρημα "Η γη των ανθρώπων", το 1939. του χάρισε το Μεγάλο Βραβείο Μυθιστορήματος της Γαλλικής Ακαδημίας. Με το ξέσπασμα του πολέμου επέστρεψε στην ενεργό υπηρεσία, παρά την κατάσταση της υγείας του, αλλά αποστρατεύθηκε στο Αλγέρι το 1940, λόγω ηλικίας. Αναχώρησε για τη Νέα Υόρκη, όπου καταπιάστηκε μ' ένα μεγάλο έργο, το "Κάστρο", που συγκέντρωνε τους στοχασμούς μιας ζωής και εκδόθηκε μόλις το 1948. Το 1943 εκδίδει τον "Μικρό Πρίγκιπα" και το "Γράμμα σ' έναν όμηρο". Γύρισε στην Ευρώπη για να καταταγεί στις γαλλικές αεροπορικές δυνάμεις με τον βαθμό του ταγματάρχη. Στις 31 Ιουλίου 1944 πραγματοποίησε μια αναγνωριστική αποστολή προς την κοιλάδα του Ρήνου, απ' όπου δεν επέστρεψε. Ο Σαιντ Εξυπερύ εξαφανίστηκε με το αεροπλάνο του το 1944, ανοιχτά της Κορσικής, ενώ εκτελούσε την ένατη πολεμική του αποστολή κυνηγώντας γερμανικά καταδιωκτικά.
