Ο ΓΚΑΜΠΡΙΕΛ ΓΚΑΡΣΙΑ ΜΑΡΚΕΣ, ο Γκάμπο ή Γκαμπίτο, όπως τον αποκαλούσαν χαϊδευτικά σε όλη τη Λατινική Αμερική, γεννήθηκε στην Αρακατάκα της Κολομβίας το 1927. Σπούδασε νομικά στην Μπογκοτά, αλλά σύντομα άρχισε να εργάζεται ως δημοσιογράφος στο εξωτερικό. Δημοσίευσε το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα, Τα νεκρά φύλλα, το 1955. Ακολούθησαν μεταξύ άλλων το ΕΚΑΤΟ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΜΟΝΑΞΙΑ, που τον καθιέρωσε διεθνώς, τα Ο ΕΡΩΤΑΣ ΣΤΑ ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΤΗΣ ΧΟΛΕΡΑΣ, ΧΡΟΝΙΚΟ ΕΝΟΣ ΠΡΟΑΝΑΓΓΕΛΘΕΝΤΟΣ ΘΑΝΑΤΟΥ και ΟΙ ΔΥΣΤΥΧΕΣ ΠΟΥΤΑΝΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΖΩΗΣ ΜΟΥ, που κυκλοφορούν από τις Εκδόσεις ΨΥΧΟΓΙΟΣ, καθώς και πάμπολλα διηγήματα και κινηματογραφικά σενάρια. Ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους συγγραφείς του εικοστού αιώνα και από τους βασικούς εκπροσώπους του μαγικού ρεαλισμού, ο Γκαμπριέλ Γκαρσία Μάρκες αποτύπωσε μοναδικά στο έργο του την ομορφιά και την τραγωδία της Λατινικής Αμερικής και τιμήθηκε για το τεράστιο έργο του με το Διεθνές Βραβείο Neustadt το 1972 και με το Νομπέλ Λογοτεχνίας το 1982. Πέθανε το 2014 στην Πόλη του Μεξικού.
