Συγγραφέας

Ο Φίλιπ Ροθ γεννήθηκε το 1933 στο Νιούαρκ του Νιού Τζέρσεϊ. Σπούδασε αγγλική φιλολογία στα Πανεπιστήμια του Bucknell και του Σικάγο. Διετέλεσε καθηγητής της συγκριτικής λογοτεχνίας στα πανεπιστήμια του Πρίνστον, της Νέας Υόρκης (Hunter College) και της Πενσυλβανίας. Διηύθυνε τη σειρά "Συγγραφείς της άλλης Ευρώπης" στις εκδόσεις Penguin και γνώρισε στο αμερικανικό κοινό συγγραφείς όπως ο Bruno Schulz και ο Μίλαν Κούντερα. Ο Φίλιπ Ροθ έχει τιμηθεί με τα βραβεία National Book Award, δύο φορές ("Αντίο, Κολόμπους", 1960, "Το θέατρο του Σάμπαθ", 1995), Pulitzer ("Αμερικανικό ειδύλλιο", 1997), PEN/Faulkner, τρεις φορές ("Επιχείρηση Σάυλωκ", 1994, "Το ανθρώπινο στίγμα", 2001, "Καθένας", 2007), National Book Critics Circle Award, δύο φορές ("Αντιζωή", 1986, "Πατρική κληρονομιά", 1991), WH Smith Literary Award ("Το ανθρώπινο στίγμα", 2001), Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger ("Αμερικανικό ειδύλλιο", 2000), Prix Medicis Etranger ("Το ανθρώπινο στίγμα", 2002), James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction ("Η συνωμοσία εναντίον της Αμερικής", 2005), με το National Medal of Arts (1998) και με το Gold Medal in Fiction της Αμερικανικής Ακαδημίας Τεχνών και Γραμμάτων (2001). Έχει λάβει δύο από τα πιο έγκυρα βραβεία PEN: το 2006 το βραβείο PEN/Nabokov για το σύνολο του έργου του και το 2007 το βραβείο PEN/Saul Bellow for Achievement in American Fiction. Το 2011 τιμήθηκε με το διεθνές βραβείο Man Booker International για το σύνολο του έργου του. Ο Ροθ είναι ο μόνος εν ζωή αμερικανός συγγραφέας που τα "Άπαντά" του εκδίδονται σε πλήρη και οριστική έκδοση από τη Library of America.
