Ο Φίλιπ Ροθ γεννήθηκε το 1933 στο Νιούαρκ του Νιού Τζέρσεϊ. Σπούδασε αγγλική φιλολογία στα Πανεπιστήμια του Bucknell και του Σικάγο. Διετέλεσε καθηγητής της συγκριτικής λογοτεχνίας στα πανεπιστήμια του Πρίνστον, της Νέας Υόρκης (Hunter College) και της Πενσυλβανίας. Διηύθυνε τη σειρά "Συγγραφείς της άλλης Ευρώπης" στις εκδόσεις Penguin και γνώρισε στο αμερικανικό κοινό συγγραφείς όπως ο Bruno Schulz και ο Μίλαν Κούντερα. Έχει λάβει δύο από τα πιο έγκυρα βραβεία PEN: το 2006 το βραβείο PEN/Nabokov για το σύνολο του έργου του και το 2007 το βραβείο PEN/Saul Bellow for Achievement in American Fiction. Το 2011 τιμήθηκε με το διεθνές βραβείο Man Booker International για το σύνολο του έργου του. Ο Ροθ είναι ο μόνος εν ζωή αμερικανός συγγραφέας που τα "Άπαντά" του εκδίδονται σε πλήρη και οριστική έκδοση από τη Library of America.
