Ο Χαρούκι Μουρακάμι, που θεωρείται ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους σύγχρονους Ιάπωνες συγγραφείς, γεννήθηκε στο Κιότο το 1949. Γνωρίστηκαν με τη γυναίκα του τη Γιόκο στο πανεπιστήμιο κι άνοιξαν στο Τόκιο ένα τζαζ κλαμπ με το όνομα "Peter Cat". Το πρώτο του μυθιστόρημα, "Hear the Wind Sing", εκδόθηκε το 1979 στα ιαπωνικά και το 1987 στα αγγλικά. Ακολούθησαν τα μυθιστορήματα "Pinball, 1973" (1983, αγγλικά: 1985),"A Wild Sheep Chase" (1982, αγγλικά: 1989), "Hard-boiled Wonderland and The End of the World" (1985, αγγλικά: 1991), και αρκετά διηγήματα, που περιλήφθηκαν στις συλλογές "The Elephant Vanishes" (1985, αγγλικά: 1991), και "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" (2005, αγγλικά: 2006). Το νέο του μυθιστόρημα έχει τίτλο "Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage", 2013 (στην Ιαπωνία), και αναμένεται να εκδοθεί στα αγγλικά το 2014. Έχει μεταφράσει στα ιαπωνικά έργα του Φ. Σκοτ Φιτζέραλντ, του Τρούμαν Καπότε, του Τζον Ίρβινγκ και του Ρέιμοντ Κάρβερ. Έχει τιμηθεί με τα βραβεία Franz Kafka και Jerusalem, καθώς και το σημαντικότερο λογοτεχνικό βραβείο της Ιαπωνίας, το Yomiury. Τα έργα του έχουν μεταφραστεί σε περισσότερες από 40 γλώσσες.
