Η Τζέιν Ώστεν γεννήθηκε το 1775 στο Στίβεντον του Χαμσάιρ, και ήταν η έβδομη από τα οχτώ παιδιά της οικογένειας. Ο πατέρας της, ο αιδεσιμότατος Τζορτζ Ώστιν, ήταν πολυμαθής και καλλιεργημένος, και η Τζέιν μορφώθηκε κυρίως στο σπίτι. Μόνο τέσσερα μυθιστορήματα εκδόθηκαν όσο ζούσε "Λογική και ευαισθησία" (1811), "Περηφάνια και προκατάληψη" (1813), "Μάνσφιλντ Παρκ" (1814) και "Έμμα" (1816) -και όλα εκδόθηκαν ανώνυμα. Σε μια σπάνια έξοδό της από το σπίτι αρρώστησε και πέθανε από τη νόσο του Άντισον το 1817. Δύο ακόμη μυθιστορήματα, το "Πειθώ" και το "Νορθάνγκερ Άμπει" εκδόθηκαν μετά το θάνατό της, το 1818. Το "Σάντιτον", το μυθιστόρημα που έγραφε όταν πέθανε, εκδόθηκε το 1925.
